CHANDIGARH, April 29:
In a major boost to accessible healthcare, the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana under the Punjab Government has enabled nearly 4,600 free knee replacement surgeries in just three months, helping thousands of patients regain mobility and live pain-free lives.
The surge in surgeries highlights a growing shift in Punjab’s healthcare landscape, where high-cost procedures like knee replacements are now being offered cashless, removing a major financial barrier that once forced patients to delay treatment.
Patients across the state are already witnessing life-changing results. Many who struggled with severe knee pain and limited movement due to osteoarthritis are now able to walk independently after undergoing surgery through the scheme.
Doctors report a sharp increase in orthopaedic procedures since the scheme’s rollout. According to specialists at government hospitals, monthly knee and hip replacement surgeries have significantly risen, reflecting increased awareness and affordability. The treatment, which earlier cost between ₹50,000 and ₹1 lakh, is now completely cashless for registered beneficiaries using basic documents such as Aadhaar and voter ID.
Medical experts explain that knee replacement surgery involves replacing damaged joint surfaces with artificial components, restoring movement and reducing chronic pain caused by cartilage deterioration. With financial constraints removed, more patients are opting for timely intervention instead of enduring years of discomfort.
From district hospitals to premier institutions like All India Institute of Medical Sciences, similar success stories are emerging across Punjab. Families say the scheme has eliminated the stress of arranging funds, allowing them to prioritise treatment without hesitation.
The initiative is not only increasing the number of surgeries but also changing public behaviour toward healthcare. Patients who once lived with prolonged pain are now seeking early treatment, leading to better outcomes and improved quality of life.
As the state continues to expand access under the Sehat Yojana, the focus remains on ensuring that advanced medical care is no longer a privilege but a right—bringing relief, dignity, and independence back to thousands across Punjab.
