Chandigarh, April 28, 2026: The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, has approved a special one-day session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on May 1 to mark Labour Day and recognise the contribution of the working class to the state’s socio-economic development.

The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister. The session will focus on honouring labourers and artisans while also addressing key issues affecting them, including the restructuring of the MGNREGA into the proposed G-Ram-G scheme.

According to the Chief Minister, representatives of labour unions will be invited as special guests to participate in the proceedings, making the session a significant platform for worker representation. He said the Assembly will deliberate on the broader impact of policy changes on the working class, along with challenges emerging from national and global developments.

The session will also include discussions on the socio-economic conditions of workers and examine how recent reforms may affect employment and rural livelihoods. The government aims to use the platform to highlight the role of labour in strengthening the state’s economy and democratic framework.

Officials from the Chief Minister’s Office stated that the special session will serve as a tribute to millions of workers whose contributions have been vital in shaping the nation’s progress. In addition to labour-focused discussions, routine legislative business will also be conducted as per procedures laid down by the Business Advisory Committee of the Assembly.

The move is being positioned as a symbolic and policy-driven initiative to bring workers’ concerns to the forefront on Labour Day, while enabling legislative discussion on key reforms impacting the workforce.
